Laminitis is one of the most feared equine diseases. In the acute stage, horses suffer unimaginable pain. Affected horses often remain restricted in their mobility for life and require ongoing, meticulous care. They frequently experience recurring bouts of laminitis. A diagnosis of laminitis is often fatal. However, many cases of laminitis could be prevented if horse owners and managers were better informed about the causes and took appropriate preventative measures. Even horses already affected can often be helped in the long term. The key is a consistently implemented, long-term treatment plan, which—and this is usually the greatest challenge in practice—requires close collaboration between several experts and the owner. A thorough understanding of the condition can restore the affected horse to its full quality of life and, in most cases, also its usefulness to humans.
