Myths & Legends of Martial Arts Martial Arts are systems and traditions of combat. Martial Arts, which has its origins in East Asia dates back thousands of years. Different countries all over the world have developed their own fighting styles such as China with Kung Fu, Japan with Karate, Korea with Taekwondo. Martial Arts is not just about fighting it is about discipline, culture, philosophy, self-defense and fitness and competitive tournaments such as the Olympics. In China Shaolin Monks used martial arts to teach discipline, combat, mediation and philosophy; in Japan the Samurai traditions brought us Judo and Karate; Korea taekwondo foot-fighting. Each Art reflects the society, climate and philosophies of its birthplace. In recent years Martial Arts have been made popular by movies such as Enter the Dragon, The Drunken Master and Characters such as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Additionally Martial Arts have also become commonplace in sports such as Boxing, Judo and Mixed Martial Arts. In The Bahamas the late Gus Cartwright, who established the Bahamas Institute of Karate, and others were responsible for introducing and teaching self-defense classes to males and females.
