Mushrooms thrive in cool, humid, and dark conditions. Instead of creating these conditions with electricity, air conditioners, humidifiers, and artificial controls, we decided to design a room that works with nature. Attached to our greenhouse is a dedicated mushroom room built with 9-inch thick brick walls left unplastered. When the exterior walls are watered, moisture slowly moves through the bricks, increasing humidity inside the room naturally. The roof of the room is a living roof covered with plants. This layer of soil and vegetation insulates the structure from the harsh summer sun, keeping the ceiling cool and encouraging condensation. The mud floor can also be watered regularly to further cool the space and maintain the moisture levels that mushrooms love. Most importantly, the room remains completely dark, creating ideal growing conditions without the need for artificial lighting or expensive infrastructure.
