Vishwakarma is considered as the "principle of the universe", as Vishwakarma is the divine engineer of the world. According to Ramayana, Golden Lanka was ruled by Ravana. It is said that when Lord Shiva married Parvati, he asked Viswakarma to build a beautiful palace to live there. Vishwakarma built a golden palace. For the interior, Shiva called the sage Pulastya rishi (grandfather of Kubera and Ravana) to perform the "Grihapravesh" ceremony. After the sacred ceremony, when Shiva asked rishi Pulastya to ask for anything from him, dakshina Pulastya, overwhelmed by the beauty and grandeur of the house, asked Shiva for the golden palace himself. Shiva had to fulfill Pulastya's wish, Golden Lanka became the palace of his grandson Kubera. It is said that the Golden City fell to Ravanas later.
