Will The Atari VCS Survive 2024?
The VCS has been out for about 3 years now, if you backed it early. Its been closer to 2 years for most consumers. And Atari still hasn't quite delivered a home run console. Unfortunatly, the VCS has been plagued with issues. Things like a difficult software update for the less tech inclined, a store error that prevented people from buying games, and a lack of games. With about 139 titles as of the recording, there is no stand out exclusive to make someone run out and get one of these. With those few issues alone, I'm sure you're thinking "ok, video over." But there is a silver lining. Atari has made some moves as of late that maybe, just maybe point to a future that includes the VCS. For starters, food fight is finally in early access for Atari VCS owners. Yes it will make its was to other places, but its only on the VCS right now, and this is the kind of fun family friendly game the VCS needs. Now, I found a few hiccups when I played, but overall, i had a fun time with the single player puzzles as well as the online play. (although, you can see I'm pretty bad in the footage shown here.) If we keep seeing devotion to games like this with an Atari first mindset, this will do wonders for the consoles reputation. The second big item as a partnership with playmaji. If you don't know what this is, I don't blame you. This company creates the polymega, a console intended to play all your old cd games via emulation and cartridge based games via adaptors, and has done a pretty poor job of getting this console out the door. But Atari to the rescue. They purchased a minority stake in the company, and I think that helped them with funding to continue production. More users are reportedly getting the console on their doorstep. They have also said the VCS will be getting support from the polymega app and remix add on in the future. This opens the door to some more features and games for the VCS. i am a little spectacle if this will see the light of day given how slow playmaji has been to get stuff into consumers hands, but it gives me hope that the VCS isn't quite dead yet.
