BATAK TOBA UPA-UPA EVENT FOR 2ND BIRTHDAY This year, our son celebrated his birthday with an Upa-upa event. What is Upa-upa? Upa-upa (or Mangupa-upa) is a Batak tradition consisting of a thanksgiving ceremony and the offering of prayers and advice from elders. Aimed at asking for safety, good fortune, and restoring the spirit (tondi), this tradition is performed when someone experiences important events such as a wedding, graduation, or the birth of a child. The main practices and elements of Batak traditional upa-upa include: Prayers and Advice: Traditional elders or parents will feed food (rice and side dishes) to the recipient while reciting prayers and life advice. Arsik Goldfish: A mandatory dish symbolizing blessings, prosperity, and a smooth life. Wearing Ulos: A traditional Batak cloth draped over the recipient as a symbol of protection, blessing, and affection. **Giving Tumpak / Sombah: Money or a token of love from the extended family as provisions or moral support to start a new life.
