Nina Simone - When Malindy Sings / Swing Low Sweet Chariot (Live)

Nina's victorious performance at Newport in 1960 resulted in a return visit to the famed jazz festival in 1963. Accompanied by Al Schackman, Lisle Atkinson (who would become Nina's bassist for much of the 60s), Montego Joe (occasionally Nina's percussionist through the late '60s) and Phil Alonzo on guitar, Nina created a medley of "When Malindy Sings", a song based on a poem by the noted African-American writer Paul Laurence Dunbar with music by a much-favored Simone musical peer Oscar Brown Jr. (also recorded by Abbey Lincoln in 1961) with the traditional hymn "Swing Low Sweet Chariot". From the July 4'63 performance, this previously unissued track was recorded as Nina was leaving Colpix for a much more impactful tenure with Philips Records. 1.
