Becoming self-sufficient with our caravan has always been a future goal. Our Tabbert Vivaldi was anything but self-sufficient. If it wasn't connected to shore power or hitched up to the caravan, even the 12-volt lights wouldn't turn on. The only thing that worked was the mover. Our Adria Alpina is already a long way ahead. All the lighting and the water pump run on 12 volts, and the heating and refrigerator can be operated with gas. Since we have an internal fresh water tank and a heated internal waste water tank, the caravan is already very close to being self-sufficient. There are still one, well, two things that are important to us that are missing. Firstly, the 230-volt socket doesn't work, and secondly, the air conditioner doesn't make a sound as long as the shore power isn't connected. The fact that we can't use 230 volts has always been a thorn in our side. Anyone who knows our channel knows that we place great value on good coffee. Especially on longer trips, this forced us to order overpriced coffee at a rest stop, since our fully automatic coffee machine with its 12-volt USB connection simply wouldn't work, and we haven't brewed coffee by hand in years. Okay, that's a matter of taste, but for us, coffee is an essential part of a good start to the day. The second issue is the television. Our TV runs on 230 volts, so it requires a working power outlet. Yes, there are also 12-volt TVs, but they were never really an option for us. The list of devices that require a 230-volt connection could actually be expanded, but that should suffice for now. Driven by the desire to solve these problems, we devised a path to self-sufficiency, which is divided into three steps. Step 1: A more powerful LiPo battery & an inverter Our built-in Super B battery was simply too small for this purpose. That's why we bought the LiTime LiFePO4 lithium battery with 300 Ah. As a first step, we will install the battery and inverter in our caravan to supply two 230-volt sockets with the necessary power. So, the first challenge of making coffee and watching TV in the caravan, even at campsites without utilities, is now solved. The second step involves installing an external power outlet with a connection for an awning, which will then recharge the battery via a charge controller. In the final step, we'll look into whether there are permanently installed modules for the caravan roof that are lightweight enough not to exacerbate our payload problem. Whether we'll also install a priority circuit to use the air conditioning is still undecided at this point; we'll just have to wait and see.
