Various pistols were tested by the Army's Technical Section: a Sig SP47 very similar to the P210, a pistol designed by the Société Alsacienne de Construction Mécanique SACM, which proposed a sort of adaptation of the PA35A for the 9mm, and a pistol designed by the Manufacture d'Armes de St-Etienne, which was an adaptation of the PA35S. This pistol was ultimately selected and adopted in 1950 under the name of the 9mm Automatic Pistol Model 1950. Mass production was entrusted to the Manufacture d'Armes de Châtellerault, and the first pistols left the factory in 1953. Châtellerault produced its pistols for ten years, and more than 200,000 pistols were manufactured. The Manufacture d'Armes de St-Etienne then resumed production in 1963 and produced 120,000 pistols by April 1978, the last year of production for these pistols.
