@juangangel Embroidery is an art that consists of ornamenting a flexible surface, usually fabric, with textile threads. The Romans called this ornamentation opus plumarium, due to the resemblance some of these works have to a bird's feather. They also called it opus phrygium, either because they obtained it through trade with the Phrygians, who in turn brought it from the East, or because they believed it to be of Phrygian origin and invention. And since embroidery was considered a process similar to painting, they called embroidered garments tunica picta or toga picta, or tunica palmata, alluding to the palmette-shaped embroidery with which they adorned them. The threads used in embroidery are the same as those used for weaving, but silk, wool, and linen are the most common, all in a variety of colors, as well as silver and gold threads in the different forms used in weaving. These threads are sometimes adorned with gems, pearls, beads, and metallic sequins. Pliny the Elder attributed the introduction of gold thread into embroidery to King Attalus I of Pergamon (3rd century BC), and for this reason, the Romans called pieces embroidered or woven in this way attalicus amictus*, and also *auriphrygium if they were only embroidered. No embroideries that can be definitively attributed to Antiquity have survived, except for some Coptic textiles from the Roman period. However, there is no doubt that excellent examples existed in Asia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as attested by reliable historians and revealed by numerous reliefs and paintings from that era. The invention and initial development of this art should be attributed to the Babylonians, since the most famous embroideries of Antiquity originated in Mesopotamia, as did the fine fabrics and high-warp tapestries from Egypt. Pliny even went so far as to say that the Egyptian loom had surpassed the Babylonian needle. The Old Testament tells us about the active trade that Phoenician merchants conducted with wool, silk, and oriental embroidery (Ezekiel, chapter 27, verses 16, 18, and 24), and repeatedly mentions the embroidery that the curtains of the Tabernacle and the veils of the Temple were to bear and indeed did. It even refers to the gold brocade and embroidery that undoubtedly existed in the times of David and Solomon (seven or eight centuries before King Attalus of Pergamum could have invented them) when it mentions the golden garments and gold fringes of the chief queen (Psalm 44, verses 10 and 14). Pitteo is a craft technique still practiced in some towns in the Americas, where pita or ixtle fiber (braided thread made from the fiber of the maguey, the American agave) is embroidered onto leather in decorative patterns. The technique is used to make belt straps, sandals, headbands, shoes, saddles, and other leather accessories of all kinds, embroidered with this material. Typical designs include flowers, animals, charreada (Mexican rodeo) motifs, and pre-Hispanic or Greco-Roman symbols.
