We are going to share our experiences with you about the TSD Open Roads Program. I’m going to give you the down and dirty and we are going to go through our fuel bill from SE TN to SD and back. That’s over 2700 miles worth of fuel. We used this program exclusively both ways on this trip so we could share some real-world numbers with you, but first let's talk about what TSD is? TSD Logistics is a company out of Texas that is actually a freight company. They have created a way to share their fuel card program with the RV community and they call it Open Roads. Let’s go over some common questions people have about the program? Is it really free? Well, there is really no cost to join the program so essentially it is free. There are some fees associated with it though, which we will get into in a minute. How do you apply for the program? You go to the website and fill out the application. There will be a link in the description but it can be found easily by googling TSD Open Roads. Why does the application ask for personal information? The only way to pay for the fuel is to link the program to your bank with a debit card. They do not allow payment with credit cards. Apparently, the reason for this is that credit cards have higher fees per use. They also have to have a way to find you if for some reason the payment doesn’t go through. I mean think about it, you could charge like 50 gallons of diesel on the account… that’s a pretty penny to be liable for. Where does this allow me to get fuel? The program is linked with multiple truck stops. All of the locations are truck stops and the card only works in the trucker lanes. This means that you should always be able to access these areas with relative ease. How do you know where to go to get fuel and what the prices are? Everything is done with the App. You can pull up a map that will show your location and the location of the surrounding truck stops that participate in the program. We usually keep an eye pretty close on where the stations are and try to plan our stops a couple hours in advance so we always know we can get to the next place. On the map, it also shows the price per gallon? If you click on the gas station it will give you information about the truck stop as well as the full price/discount price. Is the price really the discounted price? Yes and no. This goes back to the program having fees built in. Yes, it is this price, but you have a fee you have to pay each truck stop for using the program. This is generally $0.40 at Love's and $0.65 at all other places. Now that’s a total fee so it’s not very bad. Now TSD doesn’t do this out of the goodness of their hearts and they have to make some money somehow or they wouldn’t be doing this. So the total amount of your discount is then totaled, and they have a surcharge fee that is then 10% of your total discount.
