The Climb to Bhaja Caves | The Evolution of Ancient Chaitya Halls

Explore the climb to the Bhaja Caves, one of the earliest surviving Buddhist cave monasteries in India and home to one of the oldest rock-cut Chaitya Halls ever created. ⭐ Watch the full Bhaja Caves documentary: [   • Karla & Bhaja Caves | India's Oldest Buddh...  ] Before reaching the Bhaja Caves, we follow the ancient approach once walked by monks, merchants, and pilgrims through the Western Ghats. Along the way, we explore the origins of the Buddhist Chaitya Hall, tracing its development from simple open-air stupas and timber-built places of worship to the permanent rock-cut monuments that transformed Buddhist architecture across western India. Dating to around the 2nd century BC, the Bhaja Chaitya Hall preserves an early stage in this architectural evolution. Unlike the later and more elaborate Karla Caves, Bhaja still closely imitates the wooden buildings from which these monuments evolved, providing one of the clearest surviving links to architectural traditions that have otherwise disappeared. This video also explores how expanding trade routes, seasonal monsoon travel, growing monastic communities, and the patronage of rulers such as the Satavahanas helped shape the development of Buddhist cave monasteries throughout western India. Together, these forces created a network of Buddhist cave monasteries that would influence Indian architecture for centuries. This video is an excerpt from my full Bhaja Caves and Karla Caves episode.
