Body art is as old as history itself. There is evidence of multiple ancient civilizations beginning the practice of tattooing in the Neolithic era. The motifs were very varied, ranging from ceremonial to military to social status. In the Americas, body art began in pre-Hispanic times. Tattoos, piercings, and inlays were used throughout most of the continent. Tattoos and piercings were considered by our ancestors to be artistic expressions of identification and appropriation of the body. Whether for aesthetic purposes, protection, initiation rituals, or reasons of social distinction, these body expressions told the story of their owner. The body was their best means of communication.
