Gangotri Temple, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India, is the highest and most prominent shrine dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,100 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas, it forms an essential part of the sacred Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. Religious Significance & HistoryThe Descent of Ganga: According to Hindu mythology, Gangotri is the place where Goddess Ganga descended from heaven to earth. Lord Shiva caught her mighty torrents in his matted locks to save the earth from destruction. Opening Date: The temple portals swung open on 19 April 2026 on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya.Closing Date: The gates will close for the winter on 10–11 November 2026 (the day after Diwali / Bhai Dooj).Winter Abode: When closed, the idol of Goddess Ganga is ceremonially shifted downstream to her winter seat at Mukhba village (near Harsil).Daily Darshan Hours: Open daily from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 9:30 PM.
