Why does Christ begin here with poverty of spirit? Why is this put first? I answer: Christ does so to show that poverty of spirit is the very basis and foundation of all the other graces that follow. It is just as one can expect fruit to grow without a root, as other graces without this one. Until a man is poor in spirit, he cannot weep. Poverty of spirit is like the fire under the still, which causes water to drip from the eyes. When a man sees his own defects and deformities and considers himself undone, then he weeps for Christ. When the heart becomes a valley and is cast down by poverty of spirit, then the springs of holy mourning burst forth from it. Until a man is poor in spirit, he cannot hunger and thirst for righteousness. He must first be aware of need before he can hunger. This is why Christ begins with poverty of spirit because this marks the beginning of everything else. Chrysostom and Theophylact believe that this was the first sermon Christ delivered, so it may be a challenge for us to pay close attention to it. "Blessed are the poor in spirit." Our Lord Jesus Christ, in wanting to raise a high and majestic edifice of blessedness, lays the foundation of this edifice at a low level, in poverty of spirit.
