The Kenny K Documentary (Official Trailer)

Before Wild 94.1, Before 95.7 The Beat. Before Tampa had a hip-hop scene at all — there was one voice on the radio. Kenny "Kenny K" Waters wasn't just Tampa's first hip-hop Radio DJ — he was what some call the city's hip-hop godfather. In November 1986, he launched "The Kenny K Wax Attack" on WMNF 88.5 FM, bringing underground rap to the Tampa Bay airwaves for the very first time. Every Saturday night, Kenny K introduced a generation to the sounds, the culture, and the movement that would go on to shape the city forever. But his impact didn't stop at the broadcast booth. Kenny K was a founding member of Digital Underground — the legendary group behind "The Humpty Dance" — alongside Shock G. He was a Brooklyn native who grew up in Tampa, bridging two worlds and building a legacy that still echoes through Florida hip-hop today. He was a DJ, a tastemaker, a pioneer, and — to those who knew him — an incredibly kind soul gone far too soon at just 28 years old. Now, local author Mike Lortz (The Serious Tip) and Tampa DJ/filmmaker DJ SR (Silent Rage) are telling his story the right way. The Kenny K Documentary Project is a deep dive into the life, music, and lasting legacy of the man who started it all — featuring rare archival audio, never-before-seen photos, and interviews with the people who were there. This is the official trailer. The Wax Attack lives on. 🎤📻 For more info or to contribute please contact: [email protected]
