The El Niño phenomenon continues to strengthen in the Pacific Ocean and could significantly alter rainfall patterns, temperatures, and cyclones in Mexico over the coming months. Projections indicate a dry spell with less precipitation in several regions, followed by a possible increase in tropical cyclones and heavy rains toward the end of summer and into autumn. For the end of 2026 and the beginning of 2027, a greater presence of cold fronts, winter storms, temperature drops, and possible snowfall in various parts of the country is also expected. Given this outlook, the Mexican government is preparing a cell phone alert system, dam monitoring, and specialized command centers to strengthen preparedness for extreme weather events.
