Nigeria Flood Crisis: Over 1,200 Dead in 2024 as Millions Affected Across States

Nigeria continues to experience severe flooding with devastating nationwide impacts as data shows that in 2024 floods across more than 30 states led to over 1,200 deaths and affected millions of people, while early estimates for 2025 indicate between 228 and 241 deaths alongside more than 315,000 to 433,000 people affected across 25 to 27 states, with over 113,000 displaced and more than 50,000 homes damaged or destroyed, as flooding patterns persist across multiple regions including river overflow in North Central states such as Niger, Kogi and Benue, heavy rainfall and dam releases in Borno and Adamawa in the Northeast.
