How do five very different radios perform on the same weak shortwave signal? In this video, I put them head-to-head on Voice of Indonesia in German on 4755 kHz, transmitting from Jakarta and received here in Johannesburg, South Africa. The lineup ranges from ultra-compact to full-sized portable: Retekess TR-110 (tiny but capable) Tecsun PL-368 Qodosen DX-286 Eton Elite Executive Sangean ATS-909X2 Each radio is tested one after the other on the exact same signal, using my MLA30+ loop antenna connected directly to the antenna jack. To keep things fair: Bandwidth set to 3 kHz on most radios 4 kHz on the Qodosen (its filter behaves narrower) 3.5 kHz on the Tecsun (no 3 kHz option available) And the result? Honestly… surprising. Bigger and more expensive is not always better.
