Mistakes That Kill Japanese Maple Trees
Are your trees struggling? These are the main mistakes that kill trees in pots and in the ground. In this video, I’m going over the main mistakes that kill Japanese maples as well as other trees. I'm going to talk about what causes them to slowly decline, whether they’re growing in pots or planted in the ground. Japanese maples can struggle for a lot of different reasons, and the symptoms often look the same: crispy leaves, dry soil, weak growth, branch dieback, or a tree that just never seems happy. A lot of the time, the real problem is not just watering. It could be the pot size, rootbound roots, poor drainage, being planted too deep, environmental stress, pruning at the wrong time, or even over-caring for the tree. I’ll show examples from my own Japanese maples and explain how I look at the roots, soil, pot size, watering schedule, planting depth, root flare, sun exposure, wind exposure, and pruning habits to figure out what is actually stressing the tree. Topics covered in this video: Japanese maples in pots Rootbound Japanese maple trees Why water isn’t working Wrong pot size and overpotting Planting too deep and buried root flares Bad soil and poor drainage Watering mistakes in summer heat Environmental stress from sun and wind Pruning Japanese maples at the wrong time Over-caring and trying to fix too much at once If your Japanese maple has crispy leaves, dries out too fast, stays too wet, looks weak, or keeps struggling even though you’re watering it, this video will help you understand what to check before making the problem worse. My goal is to help beginner tree growers learn how to read their trees better, understand what the roots and soil are telling them, and avoid the common mistakes that slowly kill Japanese maples. 0:00 - Explaining Mistakes 1:20 - Wrong Pot Size For The Tree 2:40 - Why Water Isn't Working 3:28 - Selecting The Wrong Location For Trees 5:10 - What Happens When You Plant A Tree Too Deep 6:30 - Bad Soil Or Bad Drainage Killing Trees 8:25 - Rootbound Or Left In Pot Too Long 9:15 - Signs It's Rootbound 10:45 - Root Pruning Vs Root Correction 11:23 - Over Pruning Trees (At Wrong Time) 12:49 - Basic Pruning Illustration 13:42 - Bad Water Schedule Kills Trees 14:23 - Watering Wrong Illustration 15:00 - What To Do With Bad Soil 15:58 - Humans Are Worst Killer For Trees 17:00 - Explaining What Not To Do 17:27 - Stop Over caring For Trees
