12-Year-Old Composer: Musical Analysis of John Samuel's Prelude in C (Student's Composition) | EP 16

In this video, I analyze and present the extraordinary Prelude in C Major, composed by 12-year-old John Samuel. As his composition teacher, I guide you through a detailed musical analysis of this short piece, exploring its intricate motives, harmony, and structural qualities. Despite his young age, John displays a sophisticated understanding of composition, demonstrating skills that far surpass the typical expectations for adult composers. Throughout this analysis, we'll examine the prelude's melodic lines, harmonic progressions, and use of compositional techniques. This piece is a prime example of Neo-Romantic writing, with strong motivic coherence. 00:00:00 Presentation of video 00:00:50 John Samuel plays this first published work, Prelude in C major, Op. 1, No. 1 00:02:52 Introduction to John Samuel's music and ways to support him 00:06:30 Analysis of section A: 3 phrases in crescendo 00:41:44 Analysis of section B: development and modulations 00:59:00 Analysis of section A': recapitulation with final crescendo and coda 01:21:15 John's performance of the piece with musical analysis on screen 01:23:15 Closing considerations My name is Dr. Bohdan Syroyid, and I welcome you to my Composition Class, a space dedicated to the in-depth study of music composition and analysis.
