Hacking the Nintendo Game & Watch: Flash Chip Upgrade How To

In this video I demonstrate how to replace the flash memory chip in the nintendo game and watch. This is for use with a unlocked G&W to add more games to the device. From: Hakerek_PRO DISCORD: Generally to remove components (in this case flash) there are following options (from easiest to hard): 1) if you do not need old chip, your board is valuable and you do not feel well with unsoldering - then cut the legs of the chip (very close to the plastic chip case - using precision angle cutter) and then use soldering iron only to clean the pads from legs residues. 2) there is Chipquik alloy which have a very low melting point - 79-91 Celsius (174-195 F). By using it you can safely remove components - solder become melted for much much longer time than with using normal ones 3) you can use hot tweezers, dual-in-line or blade tip or fine tip (but not too small, as the tip contact area helps to transfer the heat). Flux helps to make better solder and to remove shorted pins (to do this, clean the tip, put some flux on the shorted pins and "stroke" them from the chip to outside). 4) you can use hotair gun, but all surrounding area have to be covered with Kapton tape to protect from the heat (small components can fly!) . This requires some experience as too high temperature will destroy PCB (when PCB is treated with too much heat will delaminate and 'vias' can the connection between layers). Good idea is to preliminary preheat PCB from longer distance and then came closer with making circles with hotgun.
