Mercedes 300E 3.4/E 34 AMG – W124 – Along with the presentation of the 24-valve M104 engine with 220 hp, an upgraded version of the 3.4 AMG was also available. From 1988, the Mercedes-Benz 300E 3.4 AMG (W124), the T-model Estate (S124) 300TE-24 3.4 AMG, the 300CE-24 3.4 AMG two-door coupé, and the 300CE-24 3.4 AMG Cabriolet were produced in limited editions with M 104 E 34 engines with a capacity of 3314 cm³, producing 185-200 kW / 252-272 hp at 6,500 rpm, and developing 330 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. The 252 hp version was available only in the Cabriolet. These models had white instrument dials in the interior, speedometers with the AMG logo graduated to 300 km/h, and tachometers to 8,000 rpm. Customers sometimes equipped these models with optional Recaro Classic C81 seats with seat adjustment. All 3.4 AMG versions were produced after the initial facelift and are technologically based on the W124 Phase II introduced in 1989. The AMG 3.4 CE models (coupés based on the 300CE-24) were left-hand drive, with 25 units produced between 1988 and 1993. Seven convertibles, eleven sedans, and possibly a few station wagons were also built (two for testing by the German motoring press). The AMG division based in Japan also performed such conversions locally for its dedicated customers, but the number of units produced in that market is unknown. The 500 E was the top-of-the-line W 124 model series in the early 1990s. Under the hood was a 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 326 hp. This is enough to reach 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. The excellent performance is due not only to the high power output but also to the standard automatic transmission, which, in typical Mercedes fashion, shifted gears quickly and smoothly. In fact, it still works perfectly today, as the 1991 model in question is still in excellent condition and can be used daily without any problems.
