I’m back on ridge-and-furrow pasture overlooking the sea and a medieval church, searching ground that’s already produced hammered coins, a pierced Roman coin, and medieval buckles near an early threshing barn. But this time, something extraordinary surfaced: a 14th-century hammered coin from the era of the Black Death. The same century, just along the coast in Dorset, ships carried rats — and plague — to England’s shores. Fittingly, the day ends at a medieval island pub built in 1336, still standing from the same plague years as the coin itself was in circulation. History doesn’t get much closer than this.
