Standing in the heart of it is "Ashigari-go Setoya-shiki," the residence of the Seto family, who served as village headmen during the Edo period. The magnificent main house, topped with a thatched roof, dates back to the mid-Edo period and boasts a history of approximately 300 years, preserving the rural culture of the Ashigara region. However, the charm of Setoya Residence lies not only in the building itself. Surrounding it are rural landscapes and waterways, with abundant nature preserved, fed by groundwater flowing from Mount Fuji and the Hakone mountains. Furthermore, Kaisei Town, despite being the smallest municipality in Kanagawa Prefecture by area, is a rare town in Japan that has continued to experience population growth for many years. The harmonious blend of old and new, and the efforts to utilize the core traditional houses in creating an attractive townscape, are truly admirable. While conveniently located near the Tokyo metropolitan area, the history of carefully preserving traditional houses and rural landscapes is now flourishing. The town name "Kaisei" is said to originate from the phrase "Kai Wu Cheng Wu" in the Chinese classic "I Ching" (Book of Changes).
