Get to know it! The village of Cărpineni is a locality in Hincesti District located at latitude 46.7597 longitude 28.3530 and altitude 51 meters above sea level. This locality is under the administration of the town of Hincesti. According to the 2004 census, the population is 9,954 inhabitants. The direct distance to the town of Hincesti is 28 km. The direct distance to the town of Chisinau is 62 km. History The commune of Cărpineni ranks second in Europe in terms of population and area. In recent years, the commune has been affected by several social, economic, institutional and ecological problems, resulting, in particular, from the reforms implemented in the agricultural sector, the migration of the working-age population, the aging of the population, the degradation of human capital, etc. The social status of the rural household is in continuous decline, consisting mainly of pensioners, the unemployed and housewives. First attested on June 1, 1768 with the name "Cărpineni from Sărata", located on the site of the current Seliştea estate, Cărpineni will move to the site of the current center of the commune around 1812, where it will merge with the Scorţeşti, Mărgelați and Tacu seliştis. From the first half of the 20th century, Cărpineni will administer the village of Topor, with which it will merge, becoming a shantytown of Cărpineni. Since 1986, Cărpineni has also included the village of Horjeşti, located 4 km SE, in its administration. The documents do not tell us anything about the origin of the toponym Cărpineni, and currently there are several hypotheses about the etymology of this word. Ştefan Holban believes that the name of the village comes from a boyar woman, who was called Cărpineanca, and to whom the village would have belonged before selling it to some nobles who came from other parts, and who would have decided to move the village from Selişte, attracting the villagers to their side. A. Ieremia is of the same opinion, saying that the toponym could represent the plural of the anthroponym Cărpineanu, which is currently attested among the anthroponyms in Cărpineni, as well as in other localities. A. Ieremia does not exclude, however, another explanation of the toponym Cărpineni: “The toponym is formed from the name of the hornbeam tree (Carpinus Butulus) and the suffix – eni which indicates the origin of the inhabitants”. Cărpinenii, therefore, should have meant “people from a place called Carpen”. The second version seems to be the correct one for the following reasons: • Hornbeam trees, very rare in Bessarabia, are found, although few in number, in the Great Forest which is located next to the Selişte estate, the old hearth of the Cărpineni. • The Seliştei Valley and the Turcului Valley which join near the village of Orac are called the Carpeni Valley (25km) and the Cărpineni Valley (15km). The Carpini Valley near the village of Orac changes its name to the Orac Valley. The inhabitants are of Răzășă origin, so they could not belong to an estate owner, but they could rent such an estate.
