The machine-gun squad Sergeant John Hawk commanded was in Chambois, France, when an enemy counterattack began on August 20, 1944. Despite being wounded, Hawk repelled the attack, leading to the surrender of 5,000 enemy troops. President Truman presented Hawk with the Medal of Honor on June 21, 1945.
