As long as Marshal Josip Broz Tito was alive, the country held its own. After his death in 1980, a gradual decline began – from politics, through the economy, to administration. Industry became increasingly inefficient, and the government's decisions increasingly flawed. Debt mounted. Slovenia and Croatia fared the best – and it was there that the first voices calling for independence from Belgrade emerged. With the collapse of the Eastern Bloc and the disintegration of the existing geopolitical order, changes also reached the Balkans. How did the civil war begin?
