🇿🇦 MARGATE: How a Few Pulled Off the Impossible (Then vs. Now)
Is Margate caught in a cycle of municipal neglect, or does its timeless holiday magic still hold strong? In this 17-minute walkthrough, we step back onto the streets of Margate, KwaZulu-Natal, to uncover a masterclass in civic pride, discipline, and sheer determination. To understand how this iconic coastal town was built and run during political and economic times far tougher than today, I am joined by the man who held the keys to the town during its most critical historical pivot: Pieter Christiaan "Riaan" Jansen van Vuren. In July 1992, Riaan was appointed Town Secretary for the Margate Borough, making him one of the youngest town secretaries in South Africa at the time. He steered the town through the intense pre-democracy transitions all the way to 2003. Most of the incredible archival stories and images in this video are drawn directly from Riaan’s brilliant book, "A Municipal Road Travelled"—but today, the history is told live by the man himself. We issue a direct, respectful challenge to the current Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM): Where are the candidates with this level of vision, discipline, and pride today? ⏱️ Video Chapters: 0:00 - Part 1: The Pulse of Margate | Riaan steps into the hot seat in 1992 as one of SA's youngest town secretaries during a massive political shift. 1:25 - Part 2: The Grand Beachfront & The Palms | The ambition behind the iconic Margate Lifeguard building, and the incredible true folklore of how the towering palm trees got here. 4:29 - Part 3: Tourism, The Pier & The Glory Days | Managing massive holiday crowds behind the Spur, the "Red vs. Wulf" pier debate, and when Margate beach was so massive it hosted major production companies like M-Net. 6:42 - Part 4: Margate Airport & The Pride of the Town | Why the airport was built and a look back at the grand annual parade when the Air Force marched the streets. 11:26- Part 5: Conclusion & A Challenge to RNM | How a dedicated few managed massive infrastructure under immense pressure. What the current municipality needs to learn from the past to bring Margate back to its full potential. 📖 Get the Book: To dive deeper into the fascinating history, administrative battles, and untold stories of our beautiful coastline, grab a copy of Riaan Jansen van Vuren's book: "A Municipal Road Travelled". 💬 Join the Conversation: What is your favorite memory of Margate in its prime?
