Restored History: A Century in Motion. The Machines That Broke the Horizons In Color

Delve deeply into the origins of the modern American automobile industry with this meticulously restored and colorized archival presentation. In the vibrant manufacturing hub of Detroit, Michigan, brothers John F. Dodge and Horace E. Dodge built a peerless reputation. For over a decade, their robust machine shop provided the mighty drivetrains that drove the Ford Motor Company to unparalleled success. Recognizing their own exceptional standards, the Dodge brothers forged an independent path, instantly garnering the allegiance of 13,000 dealers nationwide who rushed to register their support. This historical journey provides an intimate look into the sprawling facilities of early twentieth-century automotive production. We witness the screw machine department, boasting 271 machines capable of producing 300,000 finished parts daily. The sheer scale of industrial manufacturing is evident in the consumption of over 500 gallons of thread-cutting oil each day. The heat treat department showcases gears submerged in cooling oil while held by powerful pressers to ensure a quiet-running rear axle. Rigorous quality control is demonstrated using a scleroscope, an instrument with a diamond point that tests the hardness of parts, rejecting any where the diamond ball fails to rebound to a specified height. The gear department utilizes 190 machines with a daily capacity of 10,000 gears, while the cyaniding ovens consume 1,000 pounds of cyanide a day to harden the metal. The evolution of the chassis and bodywork is equally fascinating. Giant presses exert 1,100 tons of pressure to stamp front wheel hubs, while others instantly transform flat steel sheets into complete fenders, crowns and all. Bodies are enameled and baked across a two-mile-long chain conveyor system. Inside the trim shop, up to 500 hides of high-grade leather are processed daily for cushions, drawn from a massive stock of up to 30,000 hides. This is supplemented by 11,375 pounds of curled hair and three miles of waterproof mohair used daily for tops and side curtains. The assembly process culminates on a 900-foot conveyor where a car is completed every two hours and thirty-five minutes, pushing out a new vehicle every three-fourths of a minute. The completed cars—including sedans, coupes, roadsters, and touring cars—face rigorous testing on tracks featuring rough roads and steep, ice-covered inclines. Beyond the Dodge facilities, the narrative explores Henry Ford's vision to break the barriers of rural isolation. The Model T revolutionizes personal mobility, as the Highland Park plant churns out a new car every ten seconds. By capturing this era on film through his motion picture department established in 1914, Ford preserved a mesmerizing visual record of a nation transitioning into the modern mechanical age.
