The Grateful Dead's Keyboard Chair Was Designed to Kill
The Grateful Dead lost four keyboard players. Donna Jean Godchaux sat inside the band long enough to understand why — and named the cause out loud in 1979. Five players held the keyboard chair. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Tom Constanten, Keith Godchaux, Brent Mydland, Vince Welnick — four dead. The so-called keyboard curse wasn't cosmic bad luck. It was structural: Jerry Garcia's laissez-faire philosophy meant nobody intervened when the newest, most vulnerable member of the band started destroying himself. Steve Brown, who worked closely with the Dead, called the noninterference idea a cop-out. Cameron Sears and Dennis McNally — author of A Long Strange Trip — bailed Brent Mydland out of the Marin County jail in December 1989 and spent the night listening to him deny everything. After Mydland's death in July 1990, McNally told the band to take six months off. They refused, auditioned replacements, and hired Vince Welnick within weeks. Bill Kreutzmann called the auditions "the path of least resistance." Bob Weir's first words to Vince: "Is your insurance paid up?" McNally later said the band managed to pick the same emotionally vulnerable personality four times. Donna Jean Godchaux diagnosed the problem. Keith Godchaux called it malignant. The band had thirty years to fill the prescription. They never did.
