This day was a tense pitching duel between the two aces, Yoshimi and Tateyama. In the bottom of the 6th inning, with the score tied 0-0, Araki walked with one out. The conventional plan would have been to bunt or hit to right field, but... Ibata: "I was thinking of pulling an inside fastball and hitting a double down the left field line. If I could have hit a home run, that would have been even better." Araki tried to unsettle Tateyama on the base. Araki: "I wanted to make Tateyama think I was going to run, to put pressure on him. That way, I wanted to make sure Ibata's pitch was a little easier to hit." The details of this moment are described in the book "The Theory of the No. 2 Batter." I recommend it.
