Trump praises Qatar's role in Iran deal at G7 meeting

US President Donald Trump met Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France, praising Doha's role in mediating the US-Iran agreement and describing the deal as a "fair deal" that prevents Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon. Trump said the agreement is moving into a second phase, which he believes will be easier to implement, and rejected reports that Washington would provide financial payments to Tehran, insisting the US is not investing any money in Iran. Trump criticised the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal negotiated under former President Barack Obama, calling it a "disaster" and a pathway to an Iranian nuclear weapon. He said his administration withdrew from that agreement and claimed US B-2 bomber strikes destroyed Iran's nuclear material, paving the way for Tehran to accept the new terms. Trump warned that any future Iranian attempt to acquire a nuclear weapon would trigger a severe US response. Turning to Lebanon, Trump criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over an attack on Beirut's southern suburbs shortly before the agreement was signed, saying he "did not like it" and urging greater restraint. He argued that Israel's conflict with Hezbollah has gone on for too long, resulting in heavy casualties, and suggested Syria could play a role in addressing the group. Sheikh Tamim welcomed the agreement, describing it as important for both the region and Iran, and said Qatar would continue supporting diplomatic efforts. The two leaders also highlighted expanding economic ties, with Trump saying bilateral trade and investment commitments could exceed $1 trillion.
