Singing the Blues - Tommy Steele / Guy Mitchell Cover - Jez Quayle

I wish I could whistle better, but I thought I'd give it a go on this one anyway. I love singing this song. Tommy Steele was Britain's first rock 'n' roller, and this was his biggest hit record. He was pretty tame and poppy compared to his American inspirations, but I guess we had to start somewhere over here. Tommy's recording of 'Singing the Blues' reached #1 in the UK singles chart in early 1957. Before Tommy the song was recorded by Guy Mitchell, for whom it was a massive US #1, and before him by Marty Robbins. Tommy Steele's version was a very close cover of Guy Mitchell's single. I suppose it's debatable whether this song should be called 'rock 'n' roll', but that's what it was considered back in the 1950s. Paul McCartney and his band recorded a great version of this song on their MTV Unplugged show back in the 1990s.
