Neighbors Judged Her Overgrown Garden. Then They Learned Why

Neighbors Judged Her Overgrown Garden. Then They Learned Why Margarete lost her husband Jeff after years of him fighting a painful spinal condition, and then spending his final two years bedbound. The grief and depression were so overwhelming that slowly, the garden, the home, and herself were left behind. People passing by see an overgrown garden and make quick judgments — but they don’t know the story. This is not neglect, it is what happens when you carry pain too heavy to bear alone. She always watched restoration projects like this online, and never imagined someone would knock on her door and offer help, simply because it was needed. ⚠️ A note: You will notice there is no original audio from the day. My camera overheated after hours of work, and all the sound was lost. I almost didn’t share this — but Margarete’s story, her courage to open up, and the work we started here is too important to keep to ourselves. I have added voiceover to share every word she spoke, and every feeling we felt that day. We could not fix everything in one visit. We cleared the front path and entrance, removed what we could, and promised her we will not stop until this place becomes a home again — for her, and for Tara, her 15 year old dog who is her whole world. This is just the beginning. We still need electricians, plumbers, materials, and hands to help finish this work. If you can help, or know someone who can, reach out to us at [email protected]. Remember: Kindness is contagious. One small step can change someone’s whole world. 💛 Support our work Everything we do is 100% free for residents and the community.
