What German POWs Discovered When American Farmers Invited Them to Dinner

🎧 Now on Spotify! Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/show/033BGeB... In May 1943, 275,000 German and Italian soldiers surrendered in Tunisia. They had been told America was broken — a nation too weak and divided to fight. Within weeks, those same soldiers were riding in upholstered train coaches across a country that wasn't supposed to exist, staring at undamaged cities and endless farmland through the windows. But the real shock wasn't the trains. It wasn't the camps. It wasn't even the food — though the food alone contradicted everything they had believed for a decade. The real shock came when American farm wives broke every regulation in the book and invited enemy prisoners inside their homes. What happened at those kitchen tables — and what it quietly destroyed inside the minds of men who had grown up in Goebbels' sealed room — is something the War Department never fully understood. 425,000 prisoners. 700 camps. And one ordinary Tuesday dinner that did more damage to Nazi ideology than any program ever designed to fight it.
