Choral work from the composer Veljo Tormis (1930 - 2017), exemplifying his exciting writing for the choir. As with most of his pieces, this one also has its roots in Estonian folk-song or regilaul and is based on a folkloric poem, an approach which the composer used for most of his career. This piece is from the composers middle creative period in which he employed many avant-garde techniques for choir. This piece makes nice use of approximate pitches, glissandos and aleatoric notation. Tormis was regarded as one of the leading contemporary choral composers and was one of the most prominent composers in 20th century Estonia. He made extensive use of traditional Estonian folksong, regilaul textually, melodically or stylistically.
