Scene I: Stacked Straw and a Boy Playing the Flute A single boy stands in a field where the rice has been harvested, with stubble scattered beneath his feet. The melody of the flute he plays with pure innocence seeps gently into the earth, the stubble, and the straw, as if offering them quiet thanks. The tall stacks of straw—higher than the boy—listen silently to his tune. Scene II: Feast It is the night of the harvest festival. The gathering of adults is lively, filled with sake, proud stories, songs, and merriment that lasts late into the night. Scene III: Sunset and Children Against the large red setting sun, the children make their way home.
