The Five-Storey House: A Better Way to Understand Complex Symptoms

Why can a problem begin in one area of life but eventually produce symptoms somewhere completely different? In this video, Mathieu from The 5 Levels Clinic introduces the Five-Storey House metaphor: a simple way to understand downward causation and the interconnected nature of complex symptoms. Imagine the human system as a house with five floors: 1. Structure and biochemistry 2. Nervous system and regulation 3. Mind and emotions 4. Family-system patterns 5. Meaning and direction A water leak beginning on an upper floor can travel down and affect every floor beneath it. In the same way, prolonged emotional stress, recurring family patterns or a conflict in life direction may influence nervous-system regulation, behaviour and physical wellbeing. But identifying the original leak is not always enough. Even after the source has been addressed, the lower floors may still need to be drained, dried and repaired. This is why resolving a contributing cause and rehabilitating its consequences are often two different parts of the process. In this video, we explore: • What downward causation means • How the five levels interact• Why the location of a symptom may not reveal where the problem began • Why physical symptoms are still real when emotional or contextual factors are involved• Why addressing the “root cause” may not resolve every downstream consequence • The difference between root-cause care and repeated regulation or support • Why no single profession holds the entire picture The Five Levels Approach is not designed to replace medical diagnosis or appropriate healthcare. It is a framework for asking better questions, recognising complexity and understanding when collaboration or referral may be useful. ▶ Watch our introduction to the Five Levels Approach:   • Why Complex Health Problem Are Rarely Just...   🌐 Learn more about The 5 Levels Clinic:https://the5levelsclinic.com/ 📅 Start with a free 15-minute consultation:https://calendly.com/les3axes-luciego...
