Why “Traditional” DJ’s Hate This Setup

This set, recorded live at Kingston Techno, captures the final, unforgettable night of BigCat—a beloved community hub that powered the local electronic music scene. For this last dance, I didn’t hold back. I loaded the crate with heavy hitters, pushed my gear to the edge, and locked into a relentless, high-voltage narrative from the first kick to the last. Apparently, there was “too much,” “no breaks,” and “people didn’t like it.” Another comment was, “What’s up with all of this equipment?” Cute. I’m not going to shame a couple of young DJs from the Catskills who are lacking the means to invest in their craft, artistic and musical identity, or who possess no creative vision or cultural footprint. I will challenge them to dig deep, develop a musical language, and contribute to the cultural conversation of their craft in a meaningful way. This set wasn’t built for those who operate in a comfort zone or for “traditionalist” DJs who need training wheels and sing-along moments to keep a floor. It was built for people who actually came to dance—the ones who understand tension, pressure, and staying locked in for the full ride.
