Furong (Hibiscus Town)

Preparing for my trip to China, I was quite captivated by Furong Ancient Town. For movie lovers, this place is holy ground. Originally a quiet riverside village called Wangcun, it became the backdrop for Xie Jin’s legendary 1986 film Hibiscus Town. The movie was such a massive cultural phenomenon that the town eventually officially renamed itself Furong (Hibiscus). When planning my stay, I was keen to seek out a bowl of the famous local rice tofu, the very dish made famous by the film's protagonist, Hu Yuyin. But there is another side to this story. Before Furong gained its cinematic fame, it was was called Wangcun— 'The King’s Village'. For over 800 years, it was a proud heartland for the indigenous Tujia minority, ruled by hereditary local kings under the Tusi system. When the town was rebranded around the movie, centuries of tangible indigenous history were pushed into the background to favor commercial tourism. As a visitor to this fascinating place, I wanted to hold space for both of these truths. I wanted to capture the breathtaking waterfall and appreciate the cinematic history that saved the town from economic obscurity. But I also wanted to look past the movie posters and seek out the quiet corners where the true spirit the Tujia people still lived. #FurongAncientTown #HibiscusTown #TujiaCulture #IndigenousChina #KingsVillage #FurongWaterfall #HunanTravel #DiscoverChina
