The 1988 Election toke place on November 8, 1988. President Reagan was unfortunately popular, and his Vice President George Bush, was now seeking the presidency in 1988. In the primary, Most Republicans listened to Reagan, and Bush being more moderate than Reagan was maybe a way to get more moderates on the Republican ticket. Despite Bush, Bob Dole and Pat Roberts challenged him. In the Iowa caucus, Bush finished THIRD. But was able to bounce back to become the front runner, and eventually the Republican Nomination. He choose (groan) Dan Quayle, a Senator from Indiana. The Democrats had a lot of people in the primary race, but the nomination was up in the air. The front runner was originally Gary Hart, the Senator from Colorado, but he was caught in a scandal that he was cheating on his wife. Mario Cuomo, the Governor of New York, and father of Chris and Andrew Cuomo was being told to run, but he declined. Jesse Jackson, who ran for President in 1984, ran again and had a bigger campaign, but many contenders called him too liberal. Others joined like Al Gore, Joe Biden, Paul Simon and Richard Gephartd. But the Democrats had Micheal Dukakis, a governor of Massachusetts as there nominee. Lloyd Benson was his running mate. The Bush Campaign attacked Dukakis hard. At the debate, Dukakis made a poor performance, but his running mate, Lloyd Benson did make a Jab at Dan Quayle at the Vice President debate. Bush won with 426 Electoral votes, and Dukakis won 111 electoral votes.
