Pick a Medical Specialty That Won't Consume Your Life
Choosing a medical specialty is one of the highest-stakes decisions of your training, and most students make it in M1 with the least accurate information they will ever have. Learn the five questions that keep an early gut feeling from turning into a career you resent. I use my own path as the case study. I was ranked to match into orthopedic surgery before fourth year even started, residents were calling me the chief medical student, and then I withdrew every application and walked away. The five questions come out of that: what the lifestyle actually looks like ten years in and not the version sold to you on day one, whether the money is worth the grind, whether the patient population truly fits you, whether you are built for the day-to-day of the work, and whether the version of you that has finally rotated through it still wants it. Along the way I get into why emergency medicine can have both the freest schedule and one of the highest burnout rates, and why loving a subject in lecture does not mean you will love the job.
