As Jesus was weary from his journey, he sat down by the well. It was about six o’clock. 7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus asked her for a drink. 8 For the disciples had gone into that town to buy food. 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water?” For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for water, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said, “Sir, I have no vessel to draw water, and this well is deep; where then will you get this living water?” 12 Our ancestor Jacob [was] at this well "You have given it to us, and here you and your sons and your livestock have all drunk; are you greater than Jacob?" 13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give will never thirst again. The water I give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." 15 The woman said, "Lord, give me such water so that I will not be thirsty and will not have to come here to draw water." 16 He said, "Go and call your husband." 17 The woman answered, "I have no husband." Jesus said, "You are right in saying that you have no husband. 18 You have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. You are right." 19 The woman said, "Lord, I see that you are a prophet." 20 "Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place of worship is in Jerusalem." 21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem." 22 "You worship what you do not know, and we..." I worship what I know, for salvation comes from the Jews. 23 The time is coming, indeed it is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such worshipers. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. 25 The woman said, “I know that the Messiah, who is called Christ, is coming; when he comes, he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I am he whom you speak to.” 27 At that time the disciples returned and were amazed that Jesus was speaking with the woman, but no one asked him, “What do you want? Why do you speak with her?” 28 The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people, 29 “Come and see the man who told me all that I have done; is this not the Christ?” 30 They came out of the town and came toward Jesus. 31 Meanwhile the disciples asked him, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 He said, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 The disciples said to one another, “Who "Did they bring him something to eat?" 34 Jesus said, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work." 35 "Do you not say, 'There are still four months left until harvest'?
