Australia is spending more than $1.2 billion to finish sealing the Outback Way, a 2,720-kilometre route across the continent’s remote interior—better known for decades as “Australia’s longest shortcut.” This deep dive reveals how engineers build a reliable highway in a place where temperatures can exceed 50°C, towns can be hundreds of kilometres apart, and flash floods can turn dry riverbeds into walls of water. From flexible pavement, soil stabilisation and geogrids to concrete causeways, culverts and desert boreholes, every part of the road must survive conditions that would destroy an ordinary highway. The project is also designed for enormous road trains while construction advances across Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland. The Outback Way is more than an engineering project.
