Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane – Advanced Weapons and Electronics

In southern Indiana, far from the coasts, sits the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division — one of the Navy’s largest and least understood facilities. Spread across more than 100 square miles of secured land, it appears from the road as forest and fences, but inside thousands of scientists, engineers, and technicians support some of America’s most sensitive defense programs. Officially, Crane develops and sustains technologies for electronic warfare, expeditionary warfare, and strategic systems, from counter-drone measures and undersea sensors to night vision gear and precision-guided weapons. It is also a key site for maintaining components of the Navy’s Trident nuclear arsenal, making it central to the U.S. nuclear triad. Unofficially, its secrecy and scale have fueled rumors of black projects, directed-energy weapons, and experimental aerospace technology hidden deep in its grounds. Seen from above, Crane is a vast expanse of forest laced with bunkers, test ranges, and labs. To locals it is just another secure base, but to defense insiders it is a hidden engine of U.S. military power. Address: Naval Support Activity Crane, 300 Highway 361, Crane, Indiana 47522
