It took full advantage of the hardware it was released on to combine gameplay and story in a way that I haven’t seen done since. Combine this with a slick and stylish art direction, killer soundtrack, and a cast of down-to-earth characters, and you’ve got yourself one of the best games on the nintendo ds. Truly a one of a kind experience. While the world ends with you isn’t the most popular square enix game, it has a dedicated following. So much so that its spirit lived on through a couple of ports and a crossover with the kingdom hearts franchise. The game even received an anime adaptation last year, which was pretty well received as far as I could tell. But, it’s pretty clear that most of this stuff was done more so to buy time than anything since the series was lacking in new and original content. The closest we got was the extra scenario included in the 2018 final remix port titled “a new day” A lot of people took notice that in my video discussing final remix I didn’t elaborate much on this extra content. This is because while it was nice to have some extra play time, there wasn’t a whole lot for me to talk about. this epilogue was more so focused on planting seeds for a potential sequel to expand upon rather than being a complete narrative in its own right. We’re introduced to a new character, are shown some pretty abstract imagery, and the chapter ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. While there are things to talk about, a lot of it would’ve been more so leaning on the speculation side which isn’t exactly something that I like doing. A new day, when all is said and done, was more so a teaser for things to come and if I’m being honest, I was never one of the people pushing for this game to get a sequel. As much as I enjoy The World Ends With You, I would’ve been satisfied if this game was just a one-and-done sort of deal. I often compare this game to another one I like called Catherine. Both of these games are standalone, experimental titles for their respective companies and making sequels would run the risk of worsening their impact. In the case of The World Ends With You, while there was room left open for expansion, it wasn’t something that we needed to see. The game felt very conclusive and the last thing I wanted was to see a potential sequel diminish what made the first game so special. This is why the announcement of Neo The World Ends With You left me feeling rather worried. Don’t me wrong, I was excited to see this series get a bit more attention but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that some of those concerns were lingering in the back of my mind. Because of this, I ended up skipping out on the game when it launched, but eventually picked it up when it was on sale. However, by this point, people had seemingly forgotten about the game. It’s not like no one is talking about it anymore, but it’s as if people didn't even know that the game came out. why did nobody play NEO: The World Ends With you.
