Pallipuranam - Mosques of Malabar: Inside & Beyond

“Pallipurāṇam” is a documentary that unfolds the history and heritage of ancient Muslim mosques in Kerala. Beginning with the ten mosques established by Malik Dinar and his companions, the film takes viewers on a visual journey through historically significant mosques—both those that still retain their age-old grandeur and those that have been renovated—capturing their interiors and exteriors in detail. The documentary explores diverse aspects such as the unique features of mosque architecture, the role mosques played in shaping Muslim cultural identity, inscriptions, the influence of Sayyids and Sufi traditions, mosque-centered anti-colonial resistance movements, the dars educational system, mosque graveyards, and trends in mosque renovation. Covering more than a hundred ancient mosques through extensive visual documentation, the film is directed by M. Naushad. It is produced by Fanar Educational Research Foundation, Project designed by Harshad, and released in collaboration with the Mappila Heritage Library.
