Driving Around Downtown Carbondale, Illinois and SIUC Campus in 4k Video

Filmed on Sunday, September 8 2024, I drive around Carbondale, IL and the SIU Carbondale Campus to see what's going on. The town of Carbondale is named after...you guessed it...Carbon. Coal, specifically. The city was developed as a crossroads for the railroad industry and grew into a regional hub for transportation. On November 12, 1970, a largescale shootout occurred between local police and members of the local chapter of the Black Panther Party. The event was later chronicled in the documentary 778 Bullets. An area near campus known as "The Strip" was also the site of several infamous riots on Halloween in the 1980s and 1990s. The last Halloween riot occurred in 2000, when students clashed with and were tear gassed by police. After the 2000 riot, measures were taken to prevent violence on Halloween weekend. Carbondale has been named "The Eclipse Crossroads of America" and the city rebranded itself in 2017 with a new eclipse-themed logo. #drivingtour #illinois #americancity
