Prudhoe Castle: Proud, Defiant and Untaken!

Prudhoe Castle in Northumberland is a Norman stronghold that was never taken by the Scots during their raids into England. It was built after the Norman conquest of 1066 and was home of the Umfraville family and later the Percy’s. Its strong defences withstood two major sieges led by King William the Lion in 1173 and 1174. The Scot’s could not sustain a longer siege and the castle was strengthened after each raid. During the Scottish wars of independence while the Scots under William Wallace raid the nearby town of Hexham and the surrounding countryside, Prudhoe stood defiant and undamaged. When Scots King Robert the Bruce successfully drove English control out of Scotland Prudhoe maintained its unbeaten record of being in taken and has always remained in English hands. Bruce most likely knew the strength of this huge fortification and ignored it during his own raids into northern England. The castle stands today a proud and magnificent medieval castle ruin that is well worth the visit.
